The animated speculation that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would run for the Republican presidential nomination had already died down by the time she announced Oct. 5, 2011 that she wouldn't be a candidate.
Now, with speculation turning to which candidate will win her backing, we thought it was still timely to look at Palin's record on the Truth-O-Meter, for 31 statements. she has made.
Our most recent check was on whether the price of Slim Jims had shot up from 99 cents to $2.69. We checked with ConAgra, the manufacturer of the beef jerky snack, and found that, while the company sells some related products that are priced at more than $2, that none of the prices on its Slim Jim products had been raised significantly. We rated Palin's statement False.
Palin has earned 14 False ratings and five Pants on Fires. The statements that got our lowest rating included Palin's claim that seniors and the disabled "will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel'" to find out whether they would receive health care.
We've rated 10 of the former vice presidential candidate's statements as True, including her claim, in the wake of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., that she had condemned violence at a campaign stop in Arizona before the shooting.
Of other statements by Palin that we rated, six were found to be Mostly True, including "Americans now spend 100 days out of the year working for government before we even start working for ourselves." Seven were found to be Half True, including whether one state spent $1 million putting up signs to advertise the federal stimulus. And nine have been found Mostly False, including her take on American history that part of Paul Revere's ride "was to warn the British that were already there."
