The Star-Ledger introduced PolitiFact New Jersey to the Garden State nearly one year ago, with the goal to hold Garden State politicians and public figures accountable for the words they speak.
That endeavor is one reason why The Star-Ledger won the overall Innovation Award on Thursday in the New Jersey Press Association’s 2011 Better Newspapers Contest.
The Innovation Award is given to "one newspaper that introduces a service, design, feature or news package during the contest year that encourages a new segment of newspaper readers," according to the press association’s contest entry rules.
A contest judge noted about the newspaper's launch of PolitiFact New Jersey, "A very smart idea."
In 2011 PolitiFact New Jersey researched 120 statements. Of those, 46 were from Democrats, 54 from Republicans (23 by Gov. Chris Christie) and two from Independents.
The PolitiFact New Jersey team received the award Thursday evening at the press association's annual awards banquet.
With that award and more than two dozen others, the Star-Ledger won the association's "general excellence" award. To learn more about the other award winners, go to NJ.com.
