Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off in the first presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., on Sept. 26, 2016. We published 18 fact-checks from that debate and cross-referenced another 16 previous fact-checks of similar statements to see how they compared on the Truth-O-Meter. Hillary Clinton

Clinton said in the debate that according to "independent experts," Trump's tax plan "would blow up the debt by over $5 trillion and would in some instances disadvantage middle-class families compared to the wealthy." We rated this True.

Clinton said Trump "started his career back in 1973 being sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination because he would not rent apartments in one of his developments to African-Americans." We rated this True.
Clinton said, "The gun epidemic is the leading cause of death of young African-American men, more than the next nine causes put together." We rated this True.
Clinton said of Trump’s tax plan: "In fact, it would be the most extreme version, the biggest tax cuts for the top percent of the people in this country than we’ve ever had." Earlier this year, Wisconsin State Senator Jennifer Schilling said under Donald Trump’s tax plan "the top 0.1 percent of taxpayers -- people earning multiple millions of dollars a year, on average -- would get more tax relief than the bottom 60 percent of taxpayers combined." Clinton said, "If you’re a young African-American man and you do the same thing as a young white man, you are more likely to be arrested, charged, convicted, and incarcerated." In a campaign ad, she made a similar statement that we rated True.
Clinton said Trump "has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers." She made the same statement during a rally a few months prior to the debate. We rated it True.

Clinton said, "For 40 years, everyone running for president has released their tax returns."
U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis. said several days before the debate that except for Trump, "every other major party nominee" for the past 40 years has released their tax returns. We rated this Mostly True.
Clinton said to Trump, "you’ve taken business bankruptcy six times." In a previous statement, Clinton said Trump had "bankrupted his companies not once, not twice but four times." Our check found it was in fact six times, and we rated this statement Mostly True.
Clinton said Trump "actually advocated for the actions we took in Libya and urged that Gadhafi be taken out, after actually doing some business with him one time." Earlier in September, Clinton said Trump is "on record extensively supporting (the) intervention in Libya." We rated this Mostly True.
Clinton said, "I spent a year-and-a-half putting together a coalition that included Russia and China to impose the toughest sanctions on Iran."
