A Facebook post suggests you fill out a form for a Nike gift card. Just … don’t do it.
If Your Time is short
- There’s no evidence to support this claim.
A Facebook account called "Gift cards from the store" is offering — wait for it — a gift card from a store. But buyer beware: This is a case of false advertising.
"Nike lost a lawsuit against antisemitism and has to give away gift cards to its customers for just $1!," the April 5 post says. "How do I get a card? Click ‘Apply Now’ and fill out the form!"
This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)
The Facebook post suggests that antisemitism is the plaintiff in this lawsuit, which is nonsense. But we also found no evidence that Nike lost a lawsuit filed on grounds that it engaged in antisemitism, much less that it was ordered to sell customers gift cards for $1.
The Facebook account that published the post describes itself as a "sportswear store." But scroll down past several photos of Nike shoes published on the same day, and the next most recent item is from July 2022 and concerns an Egyptian food restaurant. The majority of this account’s posts, in fact, are about this restaurant.
