No, House Republicans aren’t trying to expel U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar from Congress

If Your Time is short

  • The Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee passed a resolution in 2019 urging its representatives in the U.S. House to expel U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from Congress. Nothing happened.

What’s the statute of limitations on calling something breaking news? More than three years, maybe?

Because that’s how long ago the Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee passed a resolution urging the state’s congressional representatives to expel U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from Congress.

The resolution led nowhere. Nevertheless, a Jan. 29, 2023, Facebook post has repackaged the old news with a sensational description seemingly designed to draw clicks.

"BREAKING GOP approves resolution to expel Omar from Congress! It’s OVER for her!," reads a description of a video shared in the post.

Though reading that "GOP" approved a resolution to expel Omar might bring to mind U.S. House Republicans, Omar’s colleagues in Congress, the video makes clear that this is about the Alabama Republican Party’s state executive committee.

And not only was it not "over for her," she won re-election in November. Her current term ends in 2025.

We rate claims that Republicans newly passed a resolution to expel Omar False.
