President Joe Biden continued to make steady progress on his promise to forgive student loans, as the White House announced a new plan to provide an additional $7.4 billion in relief.
The move means the Biden administration has authorized canceling $153 billion for 4.3 million borrowers since 2021, the White House said.
That means 1 out of every 10 federal student loan borrowers has been approved for some debt relief, according to White House figures.
The announcement follows other actions, including:
-
Its February announcement extending $1.2 billion in relief for borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan program that allows debtholders to lower monthly payments based partly on their household income and family size.
-
Its March announcement giving $5.8 billion in relief to more than 78,000 public service workers.
Eric Kelderman, a reporter for the Chronicle of Higher Education said that although the sum of these actions may be less than what was initially promised, the number of loans canceled is "astronomical."
"If you judge it by the campaign promise that he was going to provide student loan forgiveness to every borrower, obviously, the administration's fallen short," Kelderman said. "However, if he hadn't made that campaign promise and instead simply gone ahead with this, we would all be gobsmacked."
Sofoklis Goulas, a senior research fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C., think tank, said although he "appreciates the Biden administration's actions," he believes these changes don't address the problem's root cause.
"Those plans to alleviate student debt are late fixes to an earlier problem," Goulas said. "So, for me, it would make a lot more sense to find ways to reduce the cost of education on a person-to-person basis and, secondarily, fix the student debt issues."
Even though Biden's efforts lack the scale of his initial proposal, he continues to offer more student debt forgiveness. This promise remains In the Works.
