As part of his appeal to law-abiding gun owners, Donald Trump promised to make carrying concealed carry permits legal in all 50 states.

Some states honor concealed carry permits from other states, while other states do not. A national reciprocity bill would streamline a patchwork of state laws. About three dozen states require a permit to carry a concealed loaded handgun, and more than a dozen do not.

The Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 introduced by Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., passed in the House but never reached a vote in the Senate. Hudson's 2019 version of the bill and the Senate counterpart haven't reached the stage of a vote.

After the mass shooting in Parkland, Trump pushed back against a GOP proposal to add conceal carry to background check legislation.

"I think that maybe that bill will someday pass, but it should pass as a separate" bill, Trump told Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La.

"If you're going to put concealed carry between states into this bill, we're talking about a whole new ballgame. And you know I'm with you, but let it be a separate bill," he continued.

The Fix NICS background check legislation that Trump signed into law in March 2018 did not include the conceal carry provision.
